Talking Breezy
Talking Breezy
This Halloween was a strange one in New York City.
Following the arrival of Hurricane Sandy last weekend, Lower Manhattan is still without power after a minor catastrophe at Con Ed, and elsewhere in the city, people are starting to get desperate. Gas stations are running on empty, homes, businesses, and public spaces have been decimated, and sources say it may go on like this for another week. Even the Pickle Team out in Long Island is still waiting for someone to turn on the lights.
The current outlook is bleak at times, but while some have allowed this natural disaster to bring out their worst qualities, others have tried to accentuate the positive. Sandy has left in her wake a series of skate spots that are as extraordinary as they are temporary, and a growing overall feeling that we’re in this together.
That’s where I come in.
During the day of October 31, I toured Sunnyside, Queens with a small crew in search of some uprooted trees and their accompanying sidewalk bumps. What we found were a lot of people concerned for our safety, but more concerned with ownership of a public sidewalk. Undeterred, we hit the town. What happened next has to be seen to be believed.
